…. said nobody who has done the work.
Doing the work
Doing the work to set yourself free from your traumas can be gnarly and distressing… in places and at times.
But in the long run that work will allow integration, release and freedom which feels like nothing else.
Most of the time our trauma keeps us from feeling free.
Leap of faith
It can be frightening to think of looking at those past painful experiences as we don’t want to feel that pain again. It is very daunting.
The thing about trauma is that it isn’t always about what happened to us, but the inability to deal with the feelings around what happened.
We often feel alone with these experiences and alone with our feelings, unable to express ourselves, keeping it all in and this is what can be damaging to our health.
That is why speaking things out loud is a huge part of therapy.
You learn from yourself
The benefits when you do the work are immense. Wonderful things start to happen, you get insights and start to be aware of things you never knew or thought of before, a whole new awareness.
Insight into yourself and your life.
It wasn’t your fault.
You are not to blame.
What others thought of you had nothing to do with you.
You were not as helpless as you were lead to believe.
You are not weak.
You forgive yourself and you get to forgive others, which allows you a huge amount of freedom and energy.
The release
Forgiving isn’t saying „that was okay“ nor is it agreeing with or condoning people’s actions.
It is however a chance to release the anger and resentment residing in you. It no longer has to live within you, you no longer have to carry it all around with you, like a heavy backpack full of rocks.
Through the process of looking at your pain, you no longer feel the same pain when you talk about it. It becomes a story you tell about a past version of you.
Your triggers become less intense.
Loving thyself
You learn to re-parent yourself and be the loving guidance and support you always wanted and needed. You are the expert on you, you know what you need.
You get a sense of achievement for doing this courageous work.
You recognise your own strength.
Wired to be helped by others
What didn’t kill you can make you stronger if you do the work to integrate it.
This cannot be done alone. We need others, preferably a professional, to guide us through the process gently, slowly and with all compassion available.
We need a compassionate witness.
The prisoner cannot free themselves (although they are holding the key).
You deserve better
So if you are living with your trauma and you want to be free, then find help, the right help for you and take that first courageous step to freedom.
Because you are a fabulous being and you deserve the best life has to offer!
And maybe that pesky old trauma is stopping you from having it all…?
